STEPS TO GET YOUR PISTOL PERMIT

Process and fees vary by county. Use only the current packet from your County Clerk or Sheriff. This is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed: September 2026.

1. Get the official packet
Pick it up from the County Clerk or Sheriff in the county where you live. Do not use a Long Island or NYC checklist.

2. Take the required class
Concealed carry usually needs the New York 16-hour class plus 2 hours of live fire. Keep the original certificate.

3. Choose 4 references who will follow through
They sign the application and later get a letter they must return. Pick people who will actually mail it back. Relatives and household members are usually not allowed.

4. Fill out the packet
Most counties want 3 original copies. Black ink only. No photocopies. No white-out. List every arrest, even old or dismissed ones.

5. Get photos and documents
Passport-style photos, ID, proof of address, birth certificate or passport, and your class certificate. Follow the packet for photo size and how recent they must be.

6. Turn it in and get fingerprinted
Make the appointment. Bring the originals, photos, ID, and the exact fee they ask for. Fingerprints are usually done at the Sheriff’s Office.

7. Wait while they investigate
Your references will get a questionnaire. If they ignore it, your file stalls. This step often takes several months.

8. Meet the judge if your county requires it
Bring ID. Arrive early. Some judges decide that day. Others notify you by mail.

9. If approved, pick up the license
Then you may buy a handgun and add it to the permit. Do not buy the gun first. You do not have to buy a gun to keep the license.
